Cancer Danger In Airport ‘Backscatter’ X-Ray Machines

Submitted by on January 5, 2010 – 5:05 am24 Comments

scanAirport Backscatter x-ray machines, sometimes called “virtual strip searches” for their ability to allow security men to see beneath people’s clothing, are setting the stage for a future epidemic of cancer. Thus far, news coverage has focused almost exclusively around the more emotionally charged, privacy concerns. But the looming issue is whether repeated bombardment with radiation is “planting the seeds” of disease.

In light of the abundance of evidence attesting to radiation’s proven dangers, it is unfathomable that any competent, unbiased doctor could take the position that x-rays do not pose a menace to all living cells through which they pass, leaving behind a painful and costly trail of destruction.

Drawing on sources like The Mayo Clinic and The Radiological Society of North America as well as interviews with prominent radiologists, molecular biologists, and medical doctors, ionizing (penetrating) radiation in any dose, no matter how tiny, causes genetic mutations, which set all living cells exposed on the path to cancer. X-rays are considered ionizing radiation.

However,  the manufacturer of the new Backscatter machines, currently being piloted at several airports, along with the FDA have given assurances of the device’s “complete safety” for everyone. It is undisputed within scientific circles that even a single x-ray increases a three-month-old’s chances of developing cancer in later life by at least 10 times, and yet they have plowed ahead approving up to 5000 backscatter images per person, per year. It’s unconscionable.

Predictably, the product’s manufacturer spins out the usual half-truths, citing “very low level of x-rays’” and boasting the opinion, packaged to appear as fact, that, “The system is completely safe for all persons…” Back peddling authorities are now trying to appease the public by saying everyone will be allowed to opt out. Maybe, for now.

Also a risk are other non-medical uses of radiation, including pre-employment, dental and chiropractic x-rays, newly developed “Silent Guardian” microwave crowd control devices and even police radar beams pointed at drivers that might contribute to cataracts.

Lives get cut short and people die totally avoidable, agonizing deaths, long before their time, just so doctors can pay off their “investment’ in an office x-ray suite, or so some entrepreneur who invents a new machine for airports can make a fortune, or so hospital chains and insurance companies can generate a profit, or so a sales rep who sells x-ray machines can collect his commission.

Because I have a knee replacement, I had to be wanded coming and going at the airport when we flew to WA. After reading this, I will never fly again.

We know that the controlling parties will stop at nothing to achieve killing off 80% of the world’s population. That has been their goal for a long time. Plan 2000 was supposed to be put in effect almost 10 years ago, so they are scrambling for ways to kill us off while appearing like they are “being so helpful” and “watching out for our safety”.

    It’s called manipulating the market.
“They” use or cause all kinds of scary things to happen, one right after the other so some new device will be sold and some’one’ will make lots of money.

Spinach scare brought us irradiated fruits & vegetables. (your store does not even know which has been irradiated)

Airport incidences will bring on the X’d Ray BackStabber machine which will feed more cancer victims into our National Health Scare System.
By the way, if you are not familiar with Codex Alimentarius – it will ride in on the coat-tails of this new health care system and then you will not be able to buy a vitamin unless you see your doctor, and the price will be much, much more than you are paying at your local Health Food store.

While generally in concert with the gist of the article/excerpt, there is one misleading fact and one glaring error towards the end of the excerpt. Thinking back 25 years, I recall that 1 in 30 off the bodies cells that are exposed gets ionized by any one xray film. And there are more sensitive tissues in the body,(I.E., eyes, gonads) that are usually shielded(not with these body scanners though).

Where it’s stated “non-medical uses of radiation, including pre-employment, dental and chiropractic”. As is uncommonly known, chiropractic doctors are in fact practicing medicine (all educational bodies and licensing boards, save for a some states, title DCs as chiropractic physicians, Florida’s says Board of CVhiopractic Medicine)and utilize radiographs(xray films)in the same manner as all other types of doctors(it’s illegal not to do so). And DCs have longer training hours in xray than non specialist MD/DOs in school and are as respectful in their usage of them in their risk/reward capacity as possible.

Evidently, none of the posters has known anyone whose life was saved by a disease discovered on an xray film, either purposely or inadvertently. This occurs on a daily basis. My opinion is that not utilizing xrays for medical diagnosis would certainly kill more than any terrorist might hope for-something to ponder.

All of this does not surprise me. The economic system we have all deals with making money. Its raping the people and the planet for profit. Its the so-called “profit motive” that is our end. When mankind learns to live together in peace and harmony plus learns to be true stewards of the planet and all live on it, including human, then we will all be better off. Its either put an end to this madness and put it behind us or learn the hard way, though it seems mankind may have to learn all its lessons the hard way as opposed to the easy way.

Hi. I am Canadian and living in Canada.
Here also they are saying we must follow the

go through the x ..ere machine. Of course even the dentist do not like to give X…rayes
to often. It appears that we are not able to stop the governing bodies to waste the money on such things like this. Many people are hungry. It appears technological tools are eating up the money what people should be putting into their mouths as bread.
Let us pray for that the Lord have mercy on us and save us with good council, and that we be able to be open minded to pick up the ways to go in this heartless, lost society.

If they can’t kill you with “vaccines” then the x-rays may just take a little longer.
What’s the big deal? We are all going to die anyway, this will just speed up the process a bit.
And any increased cases of cancer or other diseases will bolster up the profits of big business so this is ALL GOOD.
Be patriotic…support our government and NEVER question what they say is best for us; THEY ARE ALWAYS RIGHT…yes: have 100% confidence in the US government and big business!! Be a patriot.

  • While I agree that airport security is a sham and an attempt to scare us and sell uneccesary equipment to airports, lets look at the x-ray facts, shall we?

    Fact: all radiation is damaging.
Fact: each person gets about .36 rem, or 360 millirems (one one thousandths of a rem) per year of x-ray exposure just from the x-rays of the sun, stars, etc (called background radiation.
Fact(at least as reported by the Health Physics Society and American Science and Engineering, Inc.: Backscatter x-rays deliver a dose of between .005 and .009 mrems per dose. That calculates out to an exposure of .2 to .1 of an hour standing in the sun. You might get that kind of exposure just waiting in the security line in an outdoor airport in Maui.

I laud HFA for it’s championing our health, but let’s choose our targets with facts, not hysteria.

  • Viviane Paolini says:

They can use “thermography” it is safe and no irradiations. They will use it in Tampa FL.
    It would cost much less.

Naturally there is also greed involve in these new machines at the airport. Millions will change hands and they should use the money for the starving people as Maria Rodriguez said.

I hope that we will have the alternative of hand search.

  • Bill says:

Once again, a doctor can’t tell the difference between something natural and something artificially induced. Our bodies can tolerate sun exposure and the like after eons of life on planet Earth. Scanners and other man-made sources of energy aren’t the same. Many of the scanners, including the proposed virtual rape machines, use Terahertz technology, which is not the same as an X-ray. The extremely high frequencies involved can “unzip” the DNA strand and severely damage protein synthesis. But what the heck, the doctors can “treat” you for this and drive home in their new Jaguars afterward.

  • Nancy Johnson says:

Dr. Feldman, you may be accurate on the dose levels you cite from various sources, but you neglect to address the CUMULATIVE effect of all the doses we are apt to receive in a year: dental x-rays, CT scans, sun (some of which is highly beneficial), mammographies, all manner of diagnostic x-rays ordered by Drs.,(usually without any consideration of our medical history of exposure) And now, a new source added to this array – airport screening.
The jury is still out on how long it takes to develop cancers from these exposures, but research implicates x-rays as a cause of cancer.

  • Carlotta says:

If the radiation is really that low, Dr. Ethan, then yeah, I guess it’s not a huge deal. My genuine concern is whether that information is accurate. I don’t have reason to believe that it is or isn’t. But I do know that VERY often these big money enterprises create front groups–”third party” “scientific” establishments to create phony evidence to support their agenda while making it look like it’s the unbiased research of an altruistic third party institution. So I’d be curious to find out how valid is the assessment of .005-.009 mrems per dose. Any further insight?

  • Paul Louis Berger says:

ONE MAJOR OMISSION in this report is that there is NO MENTION of the precursor of dis-ease, in this case, CANCER via radiation exposure. NEGATIVE EMOTIONS and BELIEFS such as long-held ANGER & RESENTMENT…that which eats away at us, as does CANCER are recognized as setting the stage for cancer. Cancer prevention action would be to expose and explain the link between emotions and dis-ease. Of course this has to happen by non-pharma funded people and organizations. Check out Louise Hay’s Heal Your Body book and share the message that our HEALTH AND WELLNESS BEGINS WITHIN and not from OUTSIDE our bodies, exposure to radiation notwithstanding. We can override this exposure with mindful action

  • Ty Bollinger says:

Flapotter is right. Since radiation causes cancer, this will help increase profits for Big Pharma, since they sell the chemo drugs that cause (I mean treat) cancer. Look, let’s all just shut up, quit complaining, and support the government. They are always looking out for our best interest, right?

The fact is that the most lucrative growth industry of these modern times is the “terror” business. Scores of companies greedy for government contracts are churning out “Big Brother Police State” technology at a frenetic pace. And while these new “full-body-porno” scanners utilized by the TSA “nuke-nazis” might humiliate many Americans (at least those who have never posed nude for Playboy or Playgirl), that’s not even the main issue, IMHO. The main concern is the ionizing radiation.

Isn’t it illegal to expose people to radiation without medical justification? How is the government allowed to irradiate us “willy-nilly” at airports? What about the deleterious effects on women in their first trimester of pregnancy, when the risks of the baby developing genetic abnormalities (caused by radiation damaging the DNA) are the highest?

Dr. John W. Gofman, an authority on the health effects of ionizing radiation, estimates that 75% of breast cancer could be prevented by avoiding or minimizing exposure to the ionizing radiation. His exhaustive research led him to conclude that there is NO SAFE DOSE-LEVEL of ionizing radiation, since it is equivalent to dropping “grenades and small bombs” on human cells.

Of course, Big Brother’s “zap” madness is a predictable result of America’s post 9-11 security hysteria. Just in case you weren’t aware, it’s straight from the Nazi playbook. According to Hermann Goering (Hitler’s right-hand-man) at the Nuremberg Trials: “Naturally the common people don’t want war . . . but the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY.” And it has worked beautifully in the USA, hasn’t it?

And, believe it or not, most Americans LOVE our loss of freedoms! According to a recent Zogby poll, most of the American “sheeple” who are traveling through airports APPROVE of the long lines and gridlock at the TSA screening points, because they “feel safer.” Oh isn’t that special? These “happy campers” should be delighted to learn about TSA nazi’s grossly invasive new “naked-full-body-zap” security plans. Let the good times roll!

The bottom line is that NO AMOUNT of ionizing radiation is safe. These airport scanners should be banned. Radiation damages the DNA in your cells and much more. It accumulates in the body during one’s lifetime and when it reaches a certain level, cancer is nearly certain. No matter what anyone tells you and no matter how they try to “down-play” the danger, just know that there is NO SAFE DOSE of radiation.

Americans who are still able to think must launch an effort to save ourselves and warn others! Let’s demand that Congress mandate TSA’s “porno-radiation” experiments be strictly voluntary. We must DEMAND our right to abstain from security procedures that will harm us and our children (both born and unborn).

  • Ty Bollinger says:

My bad. The radiation being used in these “full-body-porno” scanners is terahertz radiation and not typical ionizing radiation.

But a study conducted by Boian Alexandrov (and colleagues) at the Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico indicated that terahertz radiation has the potential to literally rip apart or unzip double-stranded DNA. This, in turn, creates bubbles that could interfere with critical processes (like DNA replication and gene expression).

I don’t really don’t mind being exposed nude for the TSA-Nazi-Pervs, but having my DNA unraveled … that’s another issue altogether!! :-)

    To Whom It May Concern;

While surfing the web I came across a full page fact sheet on the health effects of radiation emitted from back scatter technology.

I wrote that piece a couple of years back while promoting my next to last book, Playing With Fire: how to protect your health from x-rays.

Unfortunately, no reference to my book or myself was to be found anywhere near the essay, appearing in full on your website, Health Freedom Alliance.

While I am flattered that you found my work interesting and valuable enough to reproduce, and while like yourself I can certainly use all the help I can get in promoting my work which the “main stream” press unfairly ignores, I would very much appreciate it if my words carried at least my name, and also preferably the name of my book and/or website too.

Thanks for your attention to this oversight.

    Sincerely,

    Jim Hilton

  • David Smith says:

I’m not a fan of this technology or the security culture behind it, but arguing against it from a cancer perspective isn’t constructive because the numbers just don’t work out.

What the writer of this piece doesn’t seem to realize is the amount of natural ionizing radiation that we all experience just from being living beings on this planet. Dr. Feldman mentioned this above. When you fly on a plane at all, your cosmic ray exposure increases several times over what it would be if you stayed on the ground for the same period. This is the same sort of ionizing radiation as x-rays (except that it goes all the way through you instead of just interacting in your skin). In a 3-hour flight you’ll get about 1 mrem, or a hundred times worse than the scan. So if you think you’re going to get cancer from the scan, think about how much worse the actual flight is and stay home!

  • Eric says:

Fact: All Ionizing radiation can be damaging

Fact: The mrems on backscatter devices are calculated in a way to make it look like you are getting less than you are. The fact is that your skin is absorbing the lions share of the radiation as well as penetrating to a depth that will affect reproductive organs on men and women ( areas normally covered during medical exams ).

Fact: Forcing people to be irradiated or molested is neither wise or sound policy.
