The “Chocolate Cure” For Emotional Stress
There may well be another important reason for giving your sweetheart sweets for Valentine’s Day besides the traditional romantic one: The “chocolate cure” for emotional stress is now getting new support from a clinical trial published online in ACS’ Journal of Proteome Research. It found that eating about an ounce and a half of dark chocolate a day for two weeks reduced levels of stress hormones in the bodies of people feeling highly stressed. Everyone’s favorite treat also partially corrected other stress-related biochemical imbalances. Sunil Kochhar and colleagues note growing scientific evidence that antioxidants and other beneficial substances in dark chocolate may reduce risk factors for heart disease and other physical conditions. Studies also suggest that chocolate may ease emotional stress. Until now, however, there was little evidence from research in humans on exactly how chocolate might have those stress-busting effects.
In the study, scientists identified reductions in stress hormones and other stress-related biochemical changes in volunteers who rated themselves as highly stressed and ate dark chocolate for two weeks. “The study provides strong evidence that a daily consumption of 40 grams [1.4 ounces] during a period of 2 weeks is sufficient to modify the metabolism of healthy human volunteers,” the scientists say.

Yes, there is a healthy dark chocolate: Xocai. It’s cold-pressed, cold processed with no added waxes, bad fats, fillers or refined sugar. And best of all, it’s delicious. It isn’t cheap but then I don’t eat cheap food to begin with, chocolate or otherwise.

My favorite of good quality chocolate is Green & Black’s organic Dark Chocolate. I like the one that is 85% Cocoa content. I first began my intake of chocolate for the antioxident benefit. This news of it’s impact on emotional stress is just one more reason to consider dark chocolate as a regular part of your diet.

I am a chocoholic and because I couldn’t afford to buy the $1 + per ounce ready made healthy chocolate products, I have developed some of my own recipes that are delicious, simple, healthy and satisfying. I eat some nearly every day.

Personally though I love chocolate, I get the worst skin problems. I break out real bad. I wish I knew how to make my own healthy chocolate.

There is bad chocolate and I used to be addicted to it like so many others out there. I found healthy chocolate and know much more now about good vs. bad. I think everyone should be adding healthy chocolate to their diet. It’s an amazing supplement and it’s CHOCOLATE!! Replace the bad with this stuff and it’s all good…for the mind body and soul
ImmaChocoholic are you?

Funny, there’s no mention of the fact that lead researcher Sunil Kochhar is an employee of Nestlé in Switzerland. Do you think there might be a conflict here?

I agree. Green and Black’s organic 85% dark chocolate is excellent. It is one of the best tasting chocolates I’ve found. I’ve tried many different 85% chocolates and this has a delicious complex fruity flavor.

It may be that the high amount of magnesium in chocolate is at least partially responsible for the reduction in stress hormone levels. Magnesium (or dark chocolate) can also be helpful in alleviating PMS symptoms. Choose a dark chocolate that has a high percentage of cocoa – it will automatically be lower in sugar, which can counteract the beneficial components of the chocolate.

The best chocolate I ever tasted is organic, and it’s created by a lady I call the Chocolate Goddess. Her creations leaves the rest in the dust.
