Goverment to Abolish Freedom of Access to Nutritional Supplements

Submitted by on February 25, 2010 – 12:08 pm64 Comments

Health Freedom Alliance has been working for years to educate our readers about the benefits of vitamins and natural supplements and just when traditional medicine is starting to recognize the positive healthy effects the government just might take them away.
If Arizona Senator John McCain has his way, many of the supplements you rely on for good health will disappear. And the cost of the few you can still get will explode in price.
Earlier this month, Sen. McCain introduced a bill falsely labeled the “Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010” (S. 3002). Sounds good, right? Nothing to worry about .McCain says: “Legitimate dietary supplement companies should have nothing to fear from this legislation.  The purpose of the bill is not to create a sweeping regulatory structure, but instead a targeted structure that provides for openness, transparency and safety.”

Well, here’s what McCain didn’t say.
This bill would require every person involved with supplements – all the way down to mom-and-pop health food stores and multi-level-marketing distributors — to register with the FDA.  Next, every “dietary supplement facility” must turn over a complete list of the products and ingredients they sell or handle.
It gets worse. Should this bill become law, the state will determine if an ingredient can be sold. You see, under DSHEA passed in 1994, any ingredient sold before the bill passed could be sold legally forever. Well, no more.
Under this bill, the FDA will assume any ingredient “adulterated” unless “there is a history of use or other evidence of safety.” Manufacturers and distributors must provide the FDA “with information, including any citation to published articles, which is the basis on which the manufacturer or distributor has concluded that a dietary supplement containing such dietary ingredient will reasonably be expected to be safe.”
And guess who is the ultimate judge and jury? The FDA!
Please help us fight for your health freedom and forward this email to your friends and loved ones.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to “trust” any of our food sources. The government has allowed genetically engineered produce to filter into the markets without any warning to consumers. The use of pesticides, hormones, fish farms etc. has put a whole nation of people at risk. Up until now, we have been able to rely on suppliments to help provide the nutrition that has been eradicated from our “natural” food sources. Let the “natural food sources” govern themselves!

John Mc Cain had a sterling reputation as a POW; for 5 years, he had exemplary behavior and loyalty to the USA. He became a Senator with intent to protect its’ citizens, What happened? You certainly don’t need the money to be in BIG CORPORATIONS back pocket; your wife earns plenty to keep the homefires burning even if you don’t earn anything. WAKE UP and smell the roses, withdraw this petition ASAP. It’s FRAUD!

We as people of the USA require the right to make our own choices on Health care. We do not want or needGovernment regulations On health stores and certainly cannot accept registration or regulation from through or by the FDA or any other Government agency. We will choose our own health programs without Government involvement. This bill is fraudulant, and totally unacceptable….

Apparently John feels he needs extra money to win the primary for reelection to the Senate from here in AZ against a truly conservative and honest opponent–J D Hayworth. The information given above is accurate about the perfidy of the FDA and the drug cartel!

Can you imagine having to get a prescription for Vitamin C and then only for 250 mg or less?

I cannot agree with you more-

“If this had the least little bit of true concern for safety, then why does congress not address the thousands, if not tens of thousands killed in association with prescription drugs each year?”

THE U.S. OLYMPIC COMMITTEEE WANTS TO BAN YOUR VITAMIMS

Yes, they have asked McCain to push this issue. They are incredibly wary of damaging their brand. We should attack all the sports organisations that support this proposal.

Quote from his speech at the Senate:

…. Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, National Football League, National Hockey League, U.S. Olympic Committee, American College of Sports Medicine, American Swimming Coaches Association, National Collegiate Athletic Association, PGA Tour, U.S. Lacrosse, U.S. Tennis Association, U.S.A. Cycling, U.S.A. Gymnastics, U.S.A. Swimming, U.S.A. Track and Field, and U.S.A. Triathlon. ….

I can’t believe this guy. Our national unemployment rate is terribly high, and he wants to introduce a bill that will close thousands of small businesses, putting even more out of work. At the same time time, taking away every Americans freedom to keep themselves healthy. What’s next, Oxygen?

Unfortunately, the FDA is controlled these days by the drug industry, which means it cannot be trusted to decide what should be available to the American people. As bad as supplements may be (in that they are not very well self regulated and may contain less or more than they claim), they are still better than taking drugs, all of which have many severe side effects. People just don’t want to take them unless they are quite sick. Unfortunately, for this reason, it would not be helpful for the FDA to take over regulating food supplements.

I received this reply from senator Feinstein

I received your letter expressing your concerns about the “Dietary Supplement Safety Act.” I appreciate the time you took to write and apologize for the delay in my response.
As you may know, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates dietary supplements differently than it does conventional foods and prescription or over-the-counter drugs. Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, the manufacturer of the dietary supplement is responsible for ensuring the safety of the product before marketing it to the public. Dietary supplements do not need FDA approval before being marketed, however the FDA is responsible for taking action against an unsafe product once it has been introduced into the marketplace.
On February 4, 2010, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) introduced the “Dietary Supplement Safety Act” (S. 3002), which would require manufacturers of dietary supplements to register with the FDA and disclose the ingredients used in their products. It would also give the agency mandatory recall authority if a product is found to be unsafe or harmful to consumer health. This bill has been referred to the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee.
Although I am not a member of this Committee, please be assured that I have noted your opposition to this bill and will be sure to keep your comments in mind should it come before the full Senate.
Once again, thank you for writing. If you have any further questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841. Best regards.
    Sincerely yours,
    Dianne Feinstein
    United States Senator

I can’t believe herbal remedies are considered dangerous. The side effects of just about all, if not all, prescription drugs is nothing less than terrifying!!!

  • Diane Murphy says:

Please vote against this bill. Big Pharma is lobbying for this for monetary gain only.

  • Jean Ludwig says:

Actually he’s not so stupid. It was planned this way. It began with the dumbing down of America. Most people are so brain-washed and lacking of energy and thinking capacity that he knows they haven’t a clue about this and even if so, what to do about it.

  • Elena says:

If the FDA is so concerned about supplements and public health, why don’t they address and ban the worst additive to be introduced into the public food supply….High Fructose Corn Syrup is ruining the health of our population. We have an epidemic of obesity which is more harmful to a person’s health than SMOKING, but try to find food that don’t contain this deadly additive…it’s even in our bread…you know, the “staff of life”. Before the FDA attacks the supplements, it should clean up or food….but then, what’s in it for the FDA to do that?
