Goverment to Abolish Freedom of Access to Nutritional Supplements

Submitted by Drew Kaplan on February 25, 2010 – 12:08 pm64 Comments

Health Freedom Alliance has been working for years to educate our readers about the benefits of vitamins and natural supplements and just when traditional medicine is starting to recognize the positive healthy effects the government just might take them away.
If Arizona Senator John McCain has his way, many of the supplements you rely on for good health will disappear. And the cost of the few you can still get will explode in price.
Earlier this month, Sen. McCain introduced a bill falsely labeled the “Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010” (S. 3002). Sounds good, right? Nothing to worry about .McCain says: “Legitimate dietary supplement companies should have nothing to fear from this legislation.  The purpose of the bill is not to create a sweeping regulatory structure, but instead a targeted structure that provides for openness, transparency and safety.”

Well, here’s what McCain didn’t say.
This bill would require every person involved with supplements – all the way down to mom-and-pop health food stores and multi-level-marketing distributors — to register with the FDA.  Next, every “dietary supplement facility” must turn over a complete list of the products and ingredients they sell or handle.
It gets worse. Should this bill become law, the state will determine if an ingredient can be sold. You see, under DSHEA passed in 1994, any ingredient sold before the bill passed could be sold legally forever. Well, no more.
Under this bill, the FDA will assume any ingredient “adulterated” unless “there is a history of use or other evidence of safety.” Manufacturers and distributors must provide the FDA “with information, including any citation to published articles, which is the basis on which the manufacturer or distributor has concluded that a dietary supplement containing such dietary ingredient will reasonably be expected to be safe.”
And guess who is the ultimate judge and jury? The FDA!
Please help us fight for your health freedom and forward this email to your friends and loved ones.

This article could anger many people…..it is just another government (lobbyists) attempt to control the health supplement market because that is where people are turning for information and products to try to recapture their lost health via drugs and chemically processed foods. A one last stand for the pharmaceutical and corporate food industry. If this happens…..well, I guess it will just hasten all of us going back to individual sustainable farms for fresh, healthy food and working together in our local communities instead of relying on big corporations/government to provide for us. Hey–what is so bad about that? Is McCain really that stupid?

As much as we would like to unconcern ourselves with seemingly defensible politics, this new bill would place the sale of unregistered supplements in an analogous position with scheduled drugs.
If the FDA merely provided a mechanism for warning the public of potentially harmful substances, and certifications for substances which are not toxic in the amounts which are suggested to consume, then this bill would be incredibly helpful for the general public. Alas, the FDA is a vehicle for prohibition, because the government can’t trust its own citizens to decide what is best for them.

If you are tired of people deciding what you can and cannot consume, which route of medical treatments you can take, and how you can treat your OWN children, then it is YOUR responsibility to find a representative (ie., a person who represents YOU) that will provide these abilities according to, and only according to, their voting history. Please do not vote for the person you think will win, or the person who is the most physically attractive, or the person who satisfies whichever petty social bias we all have.

These people are called representatives for a reason. How do you wish to be represented?

If this had the least little bit of true concern for safety, then why does congress not address the thousands, if not tens of thousands killed in association with prescription drugs each year?

This bill merely exists under the guise of safety. Prohibition is never the answer. They neither have the right to tell us that we cannot take prescription drugs, nor do they have the right to tell us that we cannot take nutritional supplements. We are beings of free will and educated decisions.

Call your senator now and let them know how disgusted you are with the current state of affairs!

You are missing the truth — at the same time they are trying to take our supplements away, they are doing their best to force the small farmers OUT OF BUSINESS. They want us to ONLY have access to factory farm products complete with all the toxins and lack of nutrition!! They want total control of all business in this country. “These elite” have a major goal that is to depopulate the world by 80-90%, and the way they will do this is to take our nutrition away and force feed us GMO food!!

Thank you for finally getting to the point. I know this is true, but most Americans don’t and won’t accept it because they believe they are still living in “the American dream” where we all are “free” and the belief that “they wouldn’t do that to us”. I know because I have alienated most of my friends and family trying to tell them what is goin on. They don’t believe it and that is what the progressives are banking on.

The people of the USA need to start making congress work for them and not the other way around. We need to watch what they are doing in congress and hold them responisble for the action they take.We the people need to do what they can so congress notices use and pays attention to what we want.If not let then no there time in congress will be short and they can be replaced with somebody else.

Why don’t they show the public how the food industry keeps trying to fool us by changing the names of the ingredients in our foods, when there are chemicals and additives that can kill us in some things, and they don’t want us to know this. More control and more money for medications instead of encouraging us to fight for our health through learning the truth about nutrition and God’s way of healing. There should be a mighty outcry from people about this. This last thing is usually what brings on revolution for few nations can support an ARISTOCRATIC group that produces nothing of any real value. While I do not agree with the violence in a revolution I wonder what alternative can be used by some future generation. Their ads admit that certain drugs can cause hostility, anger, depression, thoughts of suicide, and even death! What condition could be worse than death? If more people took the time to research and follow through on the benefits of supplements instead of drugs, a lot of money could be saved in any health care plan and this would be a healthier country. Don’t take away our freedom to choose. How much does McCain know about supplements? We have a right to choose what is good for us, and are not harming anyone else by our choice for ourselves. I can’t believe this guy. Our national unemployment rate is terribly high, and he wants to introduce a bill that will close thousands of small businesses, putting even more out of work. At the same time time, taking away every Americans freedom to keep themselves healthy. What’s next, Oxygen?

Unfortunately, the FDA is controlled these days by the drug industry, which means it cannot be trusted to decide what should be available to the American people. As bad as supplements may be (in that they are not very well self regulated and may contain less or more than they claim), they are still better than taking drugs, all of which have many severe side effects. People just don’t want to take them unless they are quite sick. Unfortunately, for this reason, it would not be helpful for the FDA to take over regulating food supplements.

I received this reply from senator Feinstein

I received your letter expressing your concerns about the “Dietary Supplement Safety Act.” I appreciate the time you took to write and apologize for the delay in my response.
As you may know, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates dietary supplements differently than it does conventional foods and prescription or over-the-counter drugs. Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, the manufacturer of the dietary supplement is responsible for ensuring the safety of the product before marketing it to the public. Dietary supplements do not need FDA approval before being marketed, however the FDA is responsible for taking action against an unsafe product once it has been introduced into the marketplace.
On February 4, 2010, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) introduced the “Dietary Supplement Safety Act” (S. 3002), which would require manufacturers of dietary supplements to register with the FDA and disclose the ingredients used in their products. It would also give the agency mandatory recall authority if a product is found to be unsafe or harmful to consumer health. This bill has been referred to the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee.
Although I am not a member of this Committee, please be assured that I have noted your opposition to this bill and will be sure to keep your comments in mind should it come before the full Senate.
Once again, thank you for writing. If you have any further questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841. Best regards.
    Sincerely yours,
    Dianne Feinstein
    United States Senator

Please vote against this bill. Big Pharma is lobbying for this for monetary gain only.

If the FDA is so concerned about supplements and public health, why don’t they address and ban the worst additive to be introduced into the public food supply….High Fructose Corn Syrup is ruining the health of our population. We have an epidemic of obesity which is more harmful to a person’s health than SMOKING, but try to find food that don’t contain this deadly additive…it’s even in our bread…you know, the “staff of life”. Before the FDA attacks the supplements, it should clean up or food….but then, what’s in it for the FDA to do that?
