CDC: “Superbug” Speads To 35 States; Kills Upwards Of 40% Of The People Who Come In Contact
This is possibly our biggest infection control dilemma yet. Although cases of this bacterial infection have been on the rise worldwide for the last 10 years, there is an alarming spread recently across the US. Thirty-five states have reported the outbreak, but there could be more in states not required to report it. What makes this opportunistic “superbug” such a nightmare is that it is Carbapenem-Resistant, meaning “last resort antibiotic” resistant. It’s a Carbapenem-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP); Klebsiella pneumoniae is a strain of Klebsiella which is related to E. Coli and Salmonella from the family Enterobacteriaceae.
Found inside the gut, outside of the gut, it can cause lethal infection. The major reservoirs of infection are the gastrointestinal tract of patients, catheters, unclean instruments, and the hands of hospital personnel. It zeros in on hospitals, ICUs, long term care faciities like nursing homes, and those with immuno-compromised conditions. It is a potential community-acquired type of pneumonia (different, not acquired from hospitals) and the bug has an incredible ability to mutate and resist. It does indeed carry a fatality rate between 35 and 50 percent or more.
Are we just to avoid hospitals and nursing homes to keep from this public threat? While CRKP and other resistant strains laugh in the face of antibiotics, there is some glimmer of hope. As of 2005, the EPA registered chlorine dioxide (aka MMS) as a disinfectant for MRSA. Pathogens cannot resist it and it does not harm humans. Unlike bleach, it requires very small concentrations, and leaves no residue. It completely breaks down thick cell walls which is one of the reasons these superbugs are so resistant.
As of 2006, Purdue University researchers found that besides laser detection technology,
“A second innovation uses chlorine dioxide gas to kill pathogens on produce, fresh fruits and vegetables. This would be a large step up from current technologies, which mainly involve washing and scrubbing, and cannot completely rid a product of a pathogen like E. coli,” said Richard Linton, a professor of food science.
“We can use the laser technology to detect problems more quickly, determine exactly what the pathogen is and where it came from,” Linton said. “As for using this gas as a disinfectant, I would say that in my 13 years of doing research, it is 10,000 to 100,000 times more effective than any process I have seen.”
It is not clear at this time if hospitals are rigorously trying to control the bug with this disinfectant. Let’s hope that hospitals, nursing homes and others not forget this lifesaving preventative and controller.

The CDC and LA Times reports a “Superbug” that kills 40% of the people it comes in contact with has hit 35 US States and is now being spread through California medical facilities.

A dangerous drug-resistant bacterium has spread to patients in Southern California, according to a study by Los Angeles County public health officials.
More than 350 cases of the Carbapenem-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, or CRKP, have been reported at healthcare facilities in Los Angeles County, mostly among elderly patients at skilled-nursing and long-term care facilities, according to a study by Dr. Dawn Terashita, an epidemiologist with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
It was not clear from the study how many of the infections proved fatal, but other studies in the U.S. and Israel have shown that about 40% of patients with the infection die. Tereshita was not available for comment Thursday morning but was scheduled to speak about the study in the afternoon.

Given the importance of Enterobacteriaceae in healthcare-associated infections (HAI) and the extensive antimicrobial resistance found in these strains, all types of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are an important public health problem, regardless of their mechanism of resistance or their country of origin. In addition, as Enterobacteriaceae are a normal part of human flora, the potential for community-associated CRE infections also exists. Carbapenem-resistance in Enterobacteriaceae can occur by many mechanisms, including the production of a metallo-beta-lactamase (such as NDM, VIM, and IMP) or a carbapenemase (such as Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase, KPC).
CDC has been working with partners to prevent CRE infections, including those caused by KPC-producing organisms, which are the most common type of CRE in the United States. The KPC gene makesEnterobacteriaceae bacteria resistant to all beta-lactam/carbapenem antibiotics. KPC producers have been reported in about 35 states and are associated with high mortality, up to 40 percent in one report. They may be present in the other 15 states as well, but have not been reported to CDC. The presence of CRE, regardless of the enzyme that produced that resistance, reinforces the need for better antibiotic stewardship, transmission prevention, and overall HAI prevention in any healthcare setting.
The detection of new mechanisms of carbapenem resistance (ie, metallo-beta-lactamases) in the United States has raised questions about the identification and control of CRE. The mechanism of carbapenem-resistance is of epidemiologic interest but is not necessary for implementation of infection prevention recommendations. Current guidance for the control of all types of epidemiologically important multidrug-resistant organisms is available in the2006 MDRO Guideline. In addition, see specific guidance for the control of CRE. These recommendations apply regardless of the resistance mechanism.
It is important to note that CRE, unlike other drug-resistant infections such as VRSA, are not a nationally reportable or notifiable disease. Therefore, there is not a requirement to report to CDC and therefore we may not know the true number of infections caused by these organisms in the US (only those voluntarily reported to CDC).

Just thinking out loud: is this the result of our porous borders, or is it a more nefarious Fort Detrick/Plum Island-type thing that happened to slip into the real world by “accident”?! I realize that the over-prescribing as well as antibiotics in the food can create MERSA-type infections, but though one hot pepper may make a chili, three or more substantially increases the chances of achieving one’s goal!
Very interesting–and disturbing–article here. You say that CIO2 may be used to prevent CRKP from spreading on food, is there something do/take to treat an active case? Manuka honey may stop progression of some bacterial infections like MRSA: I wonder if it could help those with CRKP?
Sounds like a designer virus… which targets the sick and weak, i.e. those already in the hospital or nursing home. Has anyone ever thought that it could be some of the GMO Foods? From what I understand, in order to make a GMO Plant one must splice the gene/DNA with a virus in order to create the desired characteristics, for example, a Round-Up resistant strain of corn. I have also read there IS a connection between the increased rates of “pneumonia” and our increased consumption of these GMO Foods – Hum?
Several weeks ago my boyfriend came down with a nasty virus – then a week later it hit me after being exposed to a week of coughing & sneezing. I don’t know if it is related to the pathogens discussed in the article above – but it was a really bad virus. I can usually skirt around a viral attack with food-based nutrients and slathering on of essential oils – but this virus was a real bad one. A friend of mine was down for 6 weeks with it. The second day of it’s attack on me – it jumped in my lungs – not good – leading to deep hollow wrenching coughing fits. On the fourth day, I went online and found info on MMS (Miracle Mineral Solution). I was astounded by what I’d read – then recalled that someone had sent a bottle to my boyfriend a year ago as thanks for help on a project. I checked out the protocol for using MMS and went to my kitchen and made a dose of 1 drop MMS added to five drops of fresh lemon juice, let it activate for 3 minutes and added to a few ounces of fresh apple juice. Within a few hours after drinking it – the coughing & sneezing stopped. I continued to use MMS over several days taking 3 drops of MMS activated by 15 drops lemon juice twice a day in apple juice. It took about 9 days to clear my lungs of the viral aftermath. Without MMS, I would’ve been down at least 2 weeks with recurrences spanning over at least 2 months, maybe more. I rather liked being able to blast that virus out within a few hours with MMS. Next time I’ll take MMS as soon as I’m aware of a viral/bacterial/parasitic/mold/fungal issue so I can stop it before it takes me down. My home will always have a supply of MMS. The porous border is between big ag and FDA and USDA. There are too many factory farms where, to keep the animal alive long enough under unsafe and unsanitary conditions, they are pumped with strong antibiotics to hold back the disease until they are butcher weight. The antibiotics don’t disappear, you eat them along with the animal, beef, pork, chicken, trout, salmon etc. That is a major reason for the resistance.

Years ago when penicillin was developed, my grandfather who was both a surgeon and general practitioner said, “Although this will be a great help in the beginning, the bacteria and viruses will only get stronger with each new antibiotic. It is us who need to find ways to become strong without the aid of antibiotics. We need to research ways to increase immunity and revitalize the body.” When I read about the addition of an antibiotic strain that was implanted into corn genes, I dreaded the outcome for we would be fed small doses of antibiotics each time we ate corn. This increased the probability of the antibiotic no longer working for any virus we caught would get a small dose of the antibiotic and gradually, through the law of evolution, get stronger until no dose of it worked to kill the virus. This is the first superbug resulting a desire to control our food supply and us.

What normally would have been a few days- maybe even a week or 2 at the very very most…is now a 6 week ordeal. We have been to an alternative MD each week to make sure my 6 yr old wasn’t developing pneumonia. We finally got money in and went to see an ND/herbalist to get some really potent stuff. It’s been a little more then 24 hours and we are seeing improvement already- knock on wood! My 9.5 yr old did not catch it and neither did I. My husband brought a similar bug home 2 weeks ago and I did catch that one. It took an army tank load of stuff to stop mine after 48 hrs it was heading into my teeth from my sinuses… it took bulbs of garlic to keep it out of my lungs. My husband was away after he caught it and it took the better part of a week to shake his but it never went to his lungs- he also has the immune system of an ox. My 70 yr old father hasn’t been sick in 10 yrs- he got this too from a different source, it’s been 3 weeks and only bulbs of garlic have moved it out of his lungs and he’s not really sure yet if he’s in the clear. People at the alternative doctors office have been sick for 2-3 weeks longer then us and we keep each other appraised each week. The kids and adults in our karate classes were down for 3-4 weeks. We managed to not catch it for 2-3 weeks after it started there but then my younger 2 got it. Interesting that my 9.5 yr old is the only one who didn’t get it- mind you we upped his c and d etc. too as a precaution. I have also had our vitamin d levels just done too so we can determine where we are at in that department. I could go on, but you get the picture. Nasty bug – and this is just one of them. Just before Thanksgiving, I came down wuth something that I thought was going to kill me. Symptoms were: sneezing, coughing, fever, chills, so I thought I had the flu. Went to an emergency clinic, since my doc wasn’t in, and was I glad that I did! Was prescribed Levaquin, which was as good as taking a cold drink of water. When my doctor was finally in, he was so booked up that he couldn’t see me, so I went back to the emergency care clinic. Told them that Levaquin was for the birds, {and got script for Clarithromycin, in a dose of 1 500mg tab, every twelve hours for 7 days} since by then my lungs were heavily involved. The doctor recommended that I go to the hospital, and I said “No way!” It’s taken me since four days before Thanksigiving to start to feel pretty good again. I’m still somewhat short-winded, but nothing like I was before, when I was getting almost no air in my lungs at all. My advice is, if you’re an oldster as I am, stick close to home, strictly obey sanitary advice, and just maybe you’ll have something to look foreward to, except dying by inches with clogged lungs and God knows what else. I agree about GM foods: They’re an abomination. The government should shut down all manufacture, and destroy every single seed, because nobody knows except the company, nor will they ever tell, how dangerous they are. Hi! I’m Kirsten and I am living in the Netherlands. Last Septembre, 2010, we heard from my spcialists that I am very ill. I have Klebsiella Pneumoniae (CRKP), and Mrsa. I am dying of it. These both bacteria, superbugs, literally are eating me alive. It first started from the inside out, now it’s also from the outside in. My whole body is infected. The mrsa (found in juli 2010) started in my nostrils, eating my flesh inside. Every day rotten and fresh flesh, vains, nerves and muscles, and now also pieces of bone, came out of my nostrils. Specialists didn’t do nothing about it. Nothing at all!!! I begged them, went to four hospitals, many, many specialists. No one helped me. At this moment it is reaching my brains and has infected my eyes. I almost have no nose bone anymore. A few months later it really started to get bad. Specialists found Klebsiella Pneumoniae in my lungs. I had trombosis in both legs, embolia, pneumonia, bad cystitis, stomach problems, ulsers, terrible itch under the skin everywhere, later an emfysema and much MUCH more!!!! To much to put down here. They only kept on doing tha basic cheap tests on me, gave me only the cheapest medicine (antibiotics). Antibiotics made everything worse!!!!! I teach public school, have been for 28 years. Learned about MMS a couple years ago and started taking it. I had a lot of toxins and unwanted pathogens in my body so the MMS made me sick the first few times I took it, even small amounts but I knew it was cleaning me out. When school started in Sept. I was ready for the first round of colds and sinus infections. At first sign of anything I took MMS; 5 incremental doses for 3 days and the bug was gone. Just for maintainence I take a dose 3 times a week. I am happy to report that for 2 years now I have not been sick and I am around a lot of sick kids all winter. Plants use a passive immune system. Chemicals. By distilling the essential oils with low pressure and low temperature you create therapeutic grade essential oils. (Best if the plant is grown organically) From what I have read their are many with anti-microbial property’s. Oregano oil is very good. Stopped an infection in my hand made by a coral cut. 1 1/4 inches long. Healed up in a week.
I understand they put it up against the latest antibiotics and it did better at lower dilutions then they did. I have been using several different ones and found them to more than live up to the hype. Work at the airport with all the sick people getting off planes, with out a cold or anything for over 2 years. This was not the previous pattern. It was explained to me that the chemicals are so complex that microbes can not adjust their defenses to them. I know of three company’s out there that are selling them I can remember 2 of their names. Rocky Mountain Oils and Young Living Essential oils. That O3 or silver are my answers to this problem. MMS has been touted as a miracle for *every* disease and condition, but in reality I believe that it is a “miracle” against bacterial and viral pathogens. Please get some MMS and cure yourself. It will be difficult at first (nasty taste and it will make you nauseous and give you diarrhea, because you have so many pathogens in you), but nothing you get from the doctor’s office is going to stop the MRSA and CRKP. You say you are dying – what do you have to lose? Try it, immediately.

According to “scientists”, we have evolved to where we are now. This theory would imply that eventually, the only humans who survive to reproduce will be those who are genetically immune to such superbugs, and the human race will survive and carry on. So, not to worry, this is just evolution taking another step forward. So a few million or billion of us will perish in the interim… that’s the way it has been for millenia.
Or will we trust in a loving Creator who is planning to eliminate sickness and disease (Revelation 21:3,4)
Your choice…
Sharilyn, you hit the answer on the mark: “We need to research ways to increase immunity and revitalize the body.” Treatments are important, but unless we also focus on our immune systems and making our bodies more resistant to infections, superbugs will continue to be an uphill battle.
Bacteria are clever at survival and very fast learners. If we continue to focus infection treatments solely on killing them, they will continue to outsmart us and our antibiotics. That’s what they have been doing for millions of years. MRSA, VRSA, and CRKP are all evidence of this treatment approach.
When I had recurring Staph aureus infections, using natural treatments helped, but what really turned the tide was changing my diet and focusing on my immune system (and my stress). For me stress is the biggest thing that throws my immune system out of balance – it’s the only time I ever get a cold or get sick. I’m also sensitive to chemical cleaners – a great way to stress your immune system.
Getting off wheat, and especially sugar and soda turned my life around. MMS, essential oils, colloidal silver are all excellent alternatives to drugs. But we’re working against these treatments if we don’t clean up our diet, detox, lower our stress, and care for the healthy flora in our guts and on our skin that help protect us from bacteria like CRKP and MRSA.

Hi Wendy – I’m curious – at what point did you use the MMS – and in what dosage? My kudos to you for being smart in treating your family. So many defer to white-jackets for their family’s health and suffer greatly when their health limps along while being poisoned with BigPharma chemicals – then being labeled with their list of diseases – many of which are created with BigPharma’s toxic chemicals! I’m hoping with all of our testimonies that more people will wake from the matrix and return to “REAL” natural living devoid of poisonous chemicals. Just think of all the people/parents that are being victimized through allopathic medicine – even parents having their children taken from them because they refuse to poison their children with chemicals!

He’s received word from credible government sources that Obama has put out a kill order on him . . . apparently BigPharma has taken notice that MMS can put them out of the highly lucrative managed-disease business . . . as we know – BigGov is in the hip pocket of BigPharma. Humble states that if he’s found dead or winds up “missing” that his books become public domain and are available to be reprinted by anyone. He did this to prevent Big Pharma from burying this universal healer from mankind.

If you have a loved one in a hospital or institution who is unable to get a couple of hours of noon sun on their mostly naked body EACH DAY you MUST smuggle and administer MASSIVE doses of vitamin D3 (at least 50,000 IU/day for the first week IMO). Don’t leave the bottle it will be confiscated and destroyed. Don’t count on the hospital to administer the vitamin D. MANY would rather see your loved one die than use something other than a toxic drug. SOME hospitals know how to think but you cannot count on it. DEMAND your loved one’s vitamin D status be tested.
