GPs Must Return Flu Vaccines Over Narcolepsy Reports

Submitted by on April 15, 2011 – 11:33 am4 Comments

Earlier this year, we brought news about research that linked the swine flu vaccine to debilitating narcolepsy, especially among youth. In Finland, where the original findings stem, health officials disregarded the concerns, essentially saying the risk of narcolepsy was worth attempting to keep the flu at bay with the vaccine.

Europe’s Health Service Executive is removing all stocks of Pandemrix from general practices which coincides with the Independent’s story of eight people in Ireland, most of them teenagers, who developed narcolepsy after receiving the jabs. Sweden’s Medical Products Agency had concluded that people under 20 vaccinated with Pandemrix may be four times as likely to develop narcolepsy than those who did not get the shot. The Irish Medicine Board had been flooded with adverse-reaction reports regarding the vaccine.

Narcolepsy doesn’t just affect sleep patterns. Besides sudden, heavy sleepiness, other notable symptoms are sudden loss of muscle tone that can lead to collapse, sleep paralysis, and half asleep, half awake hallucinations. Since the European Medicines Agency has not received reports of a significant narcolepsy increase in the UK they are not recommending any hamper to the drug’s current marketing authorization.

GPs must return flu vaccine over narcolepsy fears

Scientists have linked drug to sleep disorder

The Heath Service Executive (HSE) will remove all stocks of the swine flu vaccine Pandemrix from GPs’ surgeries, the Sunday Independent has learned.

The vaccine has been linked to the disabling sleep disorder, narcolepsy.

Last week, this newspaper revealed that eight people who received the swine flu vaccine in Ireland have developed the devastating disorder, with most of the cases involving teenagers and young adults.

Now, the HSE has taken the decision to visit GP surgeries around the country and collect the vaccine made by pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline.

All GPs who received consignments of Pandemrix have been contacted in a letter from Dr Kevin Kelleher, the agency’s assistant national director of Population Health and Health Protection.

In the directive, Dr Kelleher states: “I am sure you are aware of reports from Finland and more recently from Sweden regarding a possible association between the use of Pandemrix and the onset of narcolepsy in young people.

“In early January, I advised you that Pandemrix was only recommended if you had a shortage of seasonal flu vaccine.

“As additional stocks of seasonal flu vaccine were delivered to all sites that requested them from the end of January, there has been no requirement to use Pandemrix in any age group.

“Arrangements will be made over the coming weeks to collect stocks of Pandemrix from all general practice sites.”

Last week, a new Swedish study found an increased risk of developing narcolepsy among children vaccinated with Pandemrix.

Sweden’s Medical Products Agency concluded that those under 20 vaccinated with Pandemrix may be four times as likely to develop narcolepsy than those who did not get the shot.

The Swedish findings by the Lakemedelsverket agency broadly reflect a recent study in Finland, though that investigation found that the risk of children suffering from narcolepsy was nine times higher among those vaccinated with Pandemrix.

Since August 2010, at least 12 countries have reported cases of narcolepsy, particularly among young people.

Last week, the Irish Medicines Board (IMB) said: “The IMB has received a large number of suspected adverse-reaction reports and queries in association with the pandemic influenza vaccines since October 2009, the vast majority of which were consistent with the expected pattern of adverse events for the vaccines.

“Eight reports of narcolepsy-type sleep disorders have been notified in relation to Pandemrix, most of which have been very recently received and are currently being followed up for additional information.”

The vaccination of children and adolescents in Finland with Pandemrix was suspended last year until a link to narcolepsy had either been ruled out or detected.

A spokeswoman for the IMB told the Sunday Independent that it was supportive of the latest move by the HSE to remove stocks of Pandemrix from GPs.

In additional information supplied to family doctors, the HSE describes narcolepsy as “a disabling chronic neurological disorder characterised by recurrent episodes of excessive daytime sleepiness.”

However, it also noted that narcolepsy is often accompanied by a range of other frightening symptoms including cataplexy — a sudden loss of muscle tone that is often confused with epilepsy and sometimes leads to a total collapse of the patient.

Other symptoms that can develop gradually include sleep paralysis, and hypnagogic hallucinations — extremely vivid hallucinations that occur at the boundary between sleeping and waking.

GPs are told in the HSE directive that while there has been an increase in narcolepsy in Finland and Sweden, it has not been noted in all countries using Pandemrix.

“No increase has been seen in the United Kingdom, which also used Pandemrix,” the briefing document noted.

The European Centre for Disease Control is undertaking a study in nine European countries, with the results expected by July this year.

“The European Medicines Agency has stated that no definitive conclusions can be drawn until further studies are completed and has therefore not recommended any changes to the marketing authorisation for Pandemrix,” it said.

Here, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre will now work with the IMB to examine data available on narcolepsy in Ireland.

“In summary, there has been conflicting data emerging in relation to narcolepsy and the situation is as yet unclear,” the HSE told Irish doctors.

It is hoped that the returned vaccines be destructed responsibly and will not be sent to developing countries, the latter having been suggested by some.

Additionally, if optimal storage conditions (including during transport) cannot be properly documented the vaccines may have deteriorated and if used will then be extremely deleterious to health.

Pandemrix is one of the vaccines on the market which contains the highest concentration of the controversial squalene. This is suspected by serious researchers to increase the risk of autoimmune diseases, including narcolepsy.

Increased risk of narcolepsy with a high concentration of squalene could well have been expected.

Squalene exibits entirely different properties according to route of administration, whether it is ingested and injected. Injection is for example used to create autoimmune conditions in lab rats.

The fact that there may be a difference between one country and another regarding adverse events may be due to differences in reporting systems. In Norway for example, people risk not being believed and it is complicated to report adverse events, so there is gross under reporting.

It would be interesting to have vaccine batches which have been used in different countries analysed because there are often variations between batches. In fact, having worked in production and control of sterile injections and infusions I can emphasise that no two batches are the same.

Another matter is that manufacturers do not know the entire ingredients of vaccines, in fact nobody does. With more advanced analysis instruments unexpected substances are later discovered: for example pig DNA in rotavirus vaccine and cancer causing DV40 from monkeys which was given in the polio vaccine to millions of people.

So much for the classic medical philosophy of, First: Do No Harm…

Incidentally, in Sandy L.’s excellent comment above, that should be SV40 (for simian virus), not DV40. But otherwise, well commented on. This whole issue of the actual ingredients of vaccines is extremely important. It includes other ingredients of concern than just squalene. Vaccines also contain food proteins. Allergies and anaphylactic reactions, anyone?? Live-virus vaccines also contain glutamic acid/MSG. Not only is this a cause of a bad reaction to MSG & allied substances in many foods (the body recognising it as ‘foreign’ along with the other ingredients of the vaccine), but glutamic acid lowers levels of glutathione, which is the body’s natural chelator, binding with heavy metals & toxins to eliminate them from the body. Thus, if a vaccine with glutamic acid in it – like the MMR – is given at the same time as a vaccine or vaccines with mercury and/or aluminum in it/them, that action will tend to cause the body to be unable to eliminate the heavy metals/toxins as well as if the glutamic acid were not present.

It is only through the determined work of parents with vaccine-damaged children that these facts are beginning to come out. At least some good is coming from the damage done to their children, during this terrible chapter in the checquered life of western medicine.

I wouldn’t take a flu shot if my life depended upon it…If they can’t publish the ingredients, they can keep it! They are out to euthanize as many as they can. Who trusts the government to take care of your health?

  • Penni says:

Dear Sandy & Stan, I would very much like to see websites or urls for articles so I can send to my group. Although I have never received a vaccination in my life & am in good health (most likely because of this)
I have friends mostly older who get a flu shot every time one is offered. I cannot find the correct place to send them for education that exceeds the influence of their doctor’s… I would be ever so grateful…:-) Thank you for your very clear and knowledgable info.
