New Study: Fluoride Damages Brain, Keep From Children

Submitted by on June 27, 2011 – 3:00 pm14 Comments

A breaking new study outright displays the unquestionable danger of fluoride use. Safety officials often dismissed fluoride concerns with the fact that water supplies contain on one part per million fluoride but the study published in Neurologia warned that this amount is dangerous.

Other severe cautions in the results include fluoride’s extreme toxicity and ability to cross the blood brain barrier, avoiding its use altogether especially for children, evidence that it can take 20 years for the toxic accumulation to manifest its effects and more. Fluoride effects biochemistry, neurological and mental development, destruction of teeth, and pregnancies. “Animal studies show fluoride’s toxic brain effects include classic brain abnormalities found in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.”

New Study: Fluoride Can Damage the Brain – Avoid Use in Children

NEW YORK, June 21, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — “The prolonged ingestion of fluoride may cause significant damage to health and particularly to the nervous system,” concludes a review of studies by researchers Valdez-Jimenez, et al. published in Neurologia (June 2011), reports New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation, Inc. (NYSCOF).

The research team reports, “It is important to be aware of this serious problem and avoid the use of toothpaste and items that contain fluoride, particularly in children as they are more susceptible to the toxic effects of fluoride.” (1)

“Fluoride can be toxic by ingesting one part per million (ppm), and the effects are not immediate, as they can take 20 years or more to become evident,” they write.

Most fluoridating U.S. public drinking water suppliers add fluoride chemicals to deliver 1 ppm fluoride (equal to about 1 milligram per quart) intending to benefit teeth and not to purify the water.

“Fluoridation clearly jeopardizes our children and must be stopped,” says attorney Paul Beeber, President, NYSCOF.  ”We can actually see how fluoride has damaged children’s teeth with dental fluorosis; but we can’t see the harm it’s doing to their brains and other organs. No U.S. researcher is even looking,” says Beeber.

Valdez-Jimenez, et al. describe studies that show fluoride induces changes in the brain’s physical structure and biochemistry which affects the neurological  and mental development of individuals including cognitive processes, such as learning and memory.

“Fluoride is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier, which may cause biochemical and functional changes in the nervous system during pregnancy, since the fluoride accumulates in brain tissue before birth,” they write.*

Animal studies show fluoride’s toxic brain effects include classic brain abnormalities found in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, Valdez-Jimenez’s team reports.

A different research team (Tang et al.) reported in 2008 that “A qualitative review of the studies found a consistent and strong association between the exposure to fluoride and low IQ.” (Biological Trace Element Research)  (2)

In 2006, the U.S. National Research Council’s (NRC) expert fluoride panel reviewed fluoride toxicology and concluded, “It’s apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain.” And, “Fluorides also increase the production of free radicals in the brain through several different biological pathways. These changes have a bearing on the possibility that fluorides act to increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.” (3)

On April 12, 2010, Time magazine listed fluoride as one of the “Top Ten Common Household Toxins” and described fluoride as both “neurotoxic and potentially tumorigenic if swallowed.” (4)

Phyllis Mullenix, Ph.D., was the first U.S. scientist to find evidence that fluoride damages the brain. She published her animal study in a respected peer-reviewed scientific journal in 1995 (5) and then was fired for doing so.(6)

Vyvyan Howard, M.D., Ph.D., a prominent fetal toxicologist and past-President of the International Society of Doctors for the Environment, said that current brain/fluoride research convinces him that we should stop water fluoridation.

Many communities have stopped or rejected fluoridation in the past several years  – the most recent is Fairbanks, Alaska.  This year, seven New York City Council Members co-sponsored legislation to stop fluoridation in NYC.

One comment that should be added is that the earliest study on the brain morphologic and functional effects of fluoride water were published in 1985 in Brain Research by Dr. Varner and coworkers. Also, work by Dr. Osmunson did not find direct correlations of increased alzheimer’s incidence vs. % of districts that fluoridate water in the U.S. However, the synergistic effects of aluminum and fluoride (where aluminum is more readily assimilated as aluminum fluoride complexes under acidic conditions in the stomach) appear to be involved in Alzheimer’s disease progression. Alzheimer’s is the only leading cause of death due to disease that has no cure or efficient treatment.

  • There is a major difference in the effects on brain chemistry and behavior from “water fluoridation,” depending on the compound used to add fluoride to a water system (which is a principal source of INGESTED fluoride given the limited extent to which children eat toothpaste or swallow it after brushing teeth). Over 90% of artificially fluoridated water supplies in the U.S. have been treated with either flurosilicic acid (H2SiF6) or sodium silicofluoride (Na2SiF6). Although the practice of water “fluoridation” has been controversial for many years, no attention was paid to the specific chemical used for the purpose. Although water treated with Sodium Fluoride, familiar in toothpaste, has been tested and shown to be safe, the substitution of fluorosilicic acid (H2SiF6) or sodium silicofluoride (Na2SiF6) has never been adequately studied. For this reason, in 2002, the National Toxicology Program “nominated” the silicofluorides for study of their toxicology.

Multivariate analyses of children’s blood lead levels by community in the states of Massachusetts and New York, and for U.S. counties with populations over 150,000 confirm higher absorption of environmental lead in communities using silicofluorides (but not in those using sodium fluoride). Children’s blood lead levels are higher for those aged 3 – 5 than for samples aged 5-15, with greater harmful effects for Hispanics and Blacks. These results are particularly costly due to evidence of life-long effects of chronic exposure to lead.

In addition, research by Richard Maas, et al. found that combining chloramines for disinfection with silicofluoride usage has the effect of leaching lead from copper pipes and water fixtures. For evidence, see summary and bibliography at:

I have a personal experience, whereby I had very frightening MS like neurological episodes following prescription doses of fluoride prescribed by a dentist, who told me; every day of my life I would have to apply the powerful paste to my teeth before bed time, because I was loosing teeth to decay. The decay was not corrected and a subsequent dentist helped me with that issue by improving my gum health. However, the neurological problems continued long after I discontinued the treatments. In fact I fear permanent damage. Had I continued who knows. The same dentist also told me at the time that he preferred amalgam fillings for children because their teeth are growing. Dentists have poisoned us for decades and the ADA knows it yet have perpetuated the nasty practices. Water fluoridation will be seen by future historians as one of the greatest breaches of human health constituted by a ruling power, since nazi concentration camp experiments.

As we near our great national holiday and celebrate our freedom and being “number one,” keep in mind we are the only country whose government poisons the water. Ignorance of oppression isn’t the same as freedom, but you’d never know it from all the flag waving zealots out there. I guess that’s from drinking all the fluoridated water.

    Hello,
I am alergic to fluoride, and since San Diego, CA. has started adding fluoride to the tap water, I have rashes all over my hands, arms, neck and ears. I am thankful that I have a water distiller, but not happy to wash my hair and take a bath in fluorinated water.

The Nazis were the first to use fluoride. They used to make their prisoners more docile. These were primarily jews. Many Nazis were brought to America after WWII in operation paperclip. After the war it was introduced as a cavity preventer by the dental association despite the fact that there has never been a study to prove this claim. There have been many showing how unhealthy it is. It retards mental growth and development. It is particularly harmful to inner city black children. Since the government is actively involved in poisoning its own citizens one must question their motives. It is purely profit for the nuclear waste industry or is it an attempt to put us all on Prozac? I’m inclined to believe the latter. It is used to dumb us down and make us docile so we will be believe the big lie of America – the land of the free. Ha Ha!

So instead of fixing the causes of our illnesses the government forces the use of the contaminates and pay for health care that does not recognize the causes of our illnesses.

    Makes perfect sense to me……

They should all suffer from a Hemp rash or acute lead poisoning…

What do you do with a “medical professional” so ignorant?

A Laugh and cry at the same time

    B Shoot him

C Put fluoride in his drinking water

Note to Medical Industry: Please stop “practicing” on us and learn a few facts such as “Fluoride has NO known function in the human body AND fluoride is a poison MORE toxic than lead and only slightly less toxic than arsenic.

So our 8 year old daughter’s dentist told us we were abusive parents because we refused to give our daughter toothpaste with fluoride and we refuse fluoride treatments every six months at the dentist. Our daughter unfortunately got a cavity, and he told us we were neglectful and abusive. We also refuse unnecessary x rays at each visit.

Mmmmm, neglectful and abusive??? Actually I was thinking more along the lines of well informed and loving, but hey, that’s me! Suggestions on cavity avoidance would be welcome, we already limit sweets (to basically none), brush regularly, eat healthfully so not too sure what we are missing, suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance, Joyce

Try Spry toothpaste and mouth wash, it contains xylitol and helps prevent cavaties, it comes from birch trees. Flouride is also toxic on the thyroid! I have been battling thyroid issues most of my life. My Mom insisted on giving us floride tablets everyday and we got the treatments at the dentist as well. I know she was just following instructions from the dentist. Same dentist told me it would be OK for me to take flouride tablets when I was pregnant! That it would help my baby’s teeth. Well she does have hard teeth, but when you look at them closely you can see there is evidence of too much flouride. Thank God it was not worse! I don’t know if she has any permanent damage or not although she does suffer from thyroid issues as well. Note the flouride did not do anything to prevent cavaties in my mouth! I brush after every meal and snack now, it is a hassle but it is paying off, also floss a couple times a day.

More than 3,700 professionals (including 322 dentists) urge that fluoridation be stopped citing scientific evidence that ingesting fluoride is ineffective at reducing tooth decay and has serious health risks. See statement: http://www.fluoridealert.org/statement.august.2007.html

Eleven US EPA unions representing over 7000 environmental and public health professionals are calling for a moratorium on fluoridation.

About 100 US and Canadian communities rejected fluoridation since 2008, including Fairbanks, Alaska, and Calgary, Alberta, Canada, this year.

NYC Councilman Peter Vallone, Jr introduced legislation to stop fluoridation in New York City

The Centers for Disease Control reports that over 41% of 12-15 years olds are afflicted with dental fluorosis due to fluoride over-exposure.

Commonly-consumed infant fruit juices contain fluoride, some at levels higher than recommended for pubic water supplies, according to research to be presented 3/17/2011 at the International Association for Dental Research annual meeting in San Diego

State University of New York researchers found more premature births in fluoridated than non-fluoridated upstate New York communities, according to a presentation made at the American Public Health Association’s annual meeting on November 9, 2009 in Philadelphia.

Researchers reported in the Oct 6 2007 British Medical Journal that fluoridation never was proven safe or effective and may be unethical.

Scientific American editors wrote in January 2008, “Some recent studies suggest that over-consumption of fluoride can raise the risks of disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain and the thyroid gland”

A study in the Fall 2008 Journal of Public Health Dentistry reveals that cavity-free teeth have little to do with fluoride intake. Researchers report, “The benefits of fluoride are mostly topical…while fluorosis is clearly more dependent on fluoride intake.”

All infant formula, whether concentrated or not, contain fluoride at levels that can discolor teeth – even organic, according to research published in the October 2009 Journal of the American Dental Association.

Fluoride avoidance reduced anemia in pregnant women, decreased pre-term births and enhanced babies birth-weight, concludes leading fluoride expert, AK Susheela and colleagues, in a study published in Current Science (May 2010). http://www.fluorideandfluorosis.com/Anemia/Current%20Science%20Reprint.pdf
