AZ Woman Arrested for Speaking at City Council Meeting

Submitted by on July 7, 2011 – 6:59 pm17 Comments

A video of a woman being hauled away by police while speaking at a city council meeting is causing a YouTube stir, but not much was known about the incident at first. Now it is rounding international headlines.

Jennifer “Jade” Jones sounded like she was about to air some dirty laundry about the council members when they ordered her to be taken away despite the mayor’s orders to let her have the floor. She was hospitalized for a torn ligament.

Jones is an outspoken activist who writes about her small town’s corruption in law enforcement and city council. Mayor Ed Foster sees the power-mongering and defends Jones and her right to free speech. Police Chief Jeff Gilbert views her outspokenness not as a right but as propaganda and a threat to the town’s security.

Gilbert, who hauled her away clearly dislikes her views. Previously, he presented a speech to the mayor (watch below in the article) after the Arizona shooting likening activists such as Jones, even calling her out by name, to the AZ gunman Jared Loughner! He called her comments “pure hatred and propaganda” and “poisoning the minds of the public.” He paints a picture of Loughner starting out like an outspoken activist and where that eventually lead. He cautioned the mayor that uncontrolled activists are the “warning signs” of similar violence.

There is another YouTube video showing a more informal town meeting called Quartzsite Coffee with Cops where Gilbert publicly chastises Jones for her “one-sided propaganda” and for compomising security by revealing an undercover(?) cop’s name in her publication. Jones argued that she was presenting the other side of news and that officer names are public record.

Gilbert is currently under investigation by a private firm, hired by the town, for questionable potentially criminal acts.

‘Nazi’ police ‘kidnap’ woman at town hall

Outraged mayor: ‘I’m not going to quit until I see them in jail’

A small town in Arizona is suddenly a YouTube sensation after a town-hall meeting devolved into a physical clash as a woman was forcibly removed from speaking during the public portion of the event.

Jennifer “Jade” Jones, 45, of Quartzsite, Ariz., was taken into custody by local police at the behest of Quartzsite councilmembers, over the objections of the mayor, who pleaded with officers not to remove the woman.

The incident took place June 28 during the “call to the public” section of the meeting, as Jones, a pet groomer who also publishes the Desert Freedom Press, was addressing matters of taxation and meeting protocol.

Some councilmembers interrupted Jones as she was addressing the council and audience, ordering her to relinquish the microphone.

“You may leave, or you may be escorted out,” Councilman Joe Winslow warned Jones.Jones immediately told Winslow, “You can leave or be escorted out as well. You are out of order.”

Then, as police Sgt. Fabiola Garcia attempted to take the microphone away from Jones, Mayor Ed Foster came to the Jones’ defense and interjected, “Officer, that woman has the floor. You’re violating my rules order here. Sergeant, I have control of the meeting.”

Jones was able to speak for a few moments more, but councilmembers insisted police move in and subdue her.

“Do not resist the officer!” Police Chief Jeff Gilbert instructed Jones, who responded, “I am not resisting!”

When Jones refused to give up the microphone, officers forcibly removed her from the premises, and cited her for disorderly conduct. Jones suffered a torn ligament in her elbow during the scuffle, and was transported to La Paz Regional Hospital.

In an interview with WND, Jones said she was never informed she was “under arrest,” and so she’ll seek charges of kidnapping and aggravated assault against the officers.

“That’s what I’ll ask for. It’ll be up to the state attorney general,” she said. “I’ve never seen in my entire life such a group of people with such contempt for the law.”

Jones, who claims she’s been previously harassed by police, says recently some officers – including Chief Jeff Gilbert – have been acting more erratically and dangerously, and says he even gave a speech comparing outspoken citizens like herself to Jared Loughner, the gunman who shot Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson on Jan. 8.

Just three days after the shooting that killed six people and left 14 others injured including the congresswoman, Gilbert quoted a comment published in Jones’ paper that read in part: “So Jeff and Q.P.D., the next time you piss off a patriot, think maybe, just maybe they won’t be as calm as I am. You think nothing bad will ever happen to you because you are a cop with a 10-cent badge and a gun? Don’t be so sure. … As this economy gets worse and the people get more desperate, remember that desperate people do desperate things. And as people start to lose it, they simply lose it.”

Gilbert then explained, “These words are warning signs. The propaganda that’s being spread about the local government – these are warning signs. The behavior, the outbursts, the actions that have been taking place in some of these council meetings, they are warning signs.”

“‘He’s setting up to shoot us!’ That’s what we thought. He’s coming up with a pretense to pull a gun,” Jones said. “Police are to protect and serve, not to harass and intimidate. It has to stop. Someone’s going to get really hurt, not just a torn ligament.”

When asked about the actions of the non-partisan town council, Jones said, “I liken them to monkeys in the zoo. They make a lot of noise and throw a lot of feces around, but at the end of the day they’re just primates and don’t deserve to be writing checks for [a town of] about 3,800 people. They don’t deserve to be managing money. They don’t act like they’re at the top of the food chain. It’s embarrassing.”

Mayor Foster, a retired Marine and former engineer for Wrigley Chewing Gum, is standing by Jones’ account, and says the town council and police department are filled with corruption.”He’s just an insane person, that chief of police,” the mayor said of Gilbert. “He’s a Nazi … he’s completely out of control. He thinks he’s running the town.”

WND sought comment from Gilbert, but a 9-1-1 dispatcher said the town was dealing with a massive power outage this afternoon, and the chief could not be reached.

Mayor Foster said it’s not just the police chief, but also the town manager and tax collector who are creating a terrifying atmosphere.

“People in town are scared to death of them,” he said. “It’s just a clear pattern of harassment and intimidation by this government. These people have run this town like they owned it. It’s got to be fixed and I’m not going to quit until I see them in jail.”

The mayor says the council has even precluded him from examining the payroll. He believes he’s uncovered some possible financial wrongdoing involving checks being paid to unknown personnel, and he speculates the recipients could be councilmembers themselves.

“They’re playing a sleight-of-hand with federal money,” Foster said. “I’ve tried to get the FBI, the governor and attorney general involved, and no one has paid attention. But since this video, people are asking, ‘What’s going on in Quartzsite?’”

The town of Quartzsite is located some two hours by car west of Phoenix, at the intersection of Interstate 10 and U.S. Highway 95.

“There’s nothing but jack-rabbits and coyotes here,” noted the mayor. “We’re in the middle of nowhere, 40 miles from the nearest Walmart.”

Foster calls the council members “idiots depriving people of their First Amendment rights,” and thinks a reckoning could soon be forthcoming for them.

“I got 1,200 emails yesterday,” he said, as the YouTube video has soared to nearly 40,000 views. “All of a sudden, everyone’s commenting. If I were them, I’d be scared to death.”

One of those emails was from Robert Bright, stating, “I hope to dear God Jennifer Jones sues your city for every penny she can get! Your type of thuggish governing is why our Founding Fathers of the American colonies decided to throw off the tyrannical rule of King George of England in 1776.”

Town officials are also being verbally scorched in online messageboards.

Byron Brunskill commented, “Liberty does not exist in the United States under the rule of people like this council. We need the right of recall of all elected politicians including the Congress and the president of the United States.”

Dave Kawasaki said, “People seem to have forgotten just how to control their local governments. I hope the arrestee sues everyone involved, in both personal and professional/elected capacity. I hope she wins enough to bankrupt them all, and I hope she runs for office on the proceeds.”

The next council meeting is slated for Tuesday night.

“It promises to be just as dynamic as they’ve been,” Mayor Foster said.

It seems if any person has a disagreement with those in power that we should just grin & bear it::
We Americans have a delcared law of free speech, even if I do not like what is said free speech is lawful and should be allowed and used every day.

That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends[life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness], it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government,…

…it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.

We need another revolution based on this document!

  • Lance says:

This is ridiculous. Where is the DOJ? They should get this fascist jerk off to jail, not the Jones woman.

  • Tony Alves says:

I want to know what about (freedom of speech) dont these people under stand? This is in the BILL OF RIGHTS Article 1 Effective December 15, 1791. Those cops should have been arested!!! If I were you Mrs.Jones I would sue the police department and the city council,an as far up that this thing goes.People need to stand up to this NAZISM!!! WAKE UP PEOPLE.

  • Frank says:

Too many of our ‘elected’ officials seem to forget that winning an election only means they were hired, just like any janitor, or babysitter is hired. They are not the bosses, not even the President. They all work for we the people. Until that relationship is restored we will continue to see situations like this. WE ARE THE BOSSES – THEY WORK FOR US!

  • horace says:

We’re tired of being nice while corruption engulfs & destroys our USA. Like all politicians, like the non-citizen, corrupt, illegal Obama. People are following him. What a crime but people are tired of this & ready to stop it. It starts here like Jones. My hat goes off to her. All people could stop standing idly by & watching our AWESOME AMERICA go down in corruption.

  • Don Jusko says:

It sounds like a big city lawyer will be stopping by to handle the Jones case. Let him do it and bury these corrupt officials, take the rest of the money and back a new council and Police Chief. It sounds like they need some new police in Quartzsite also. The citizens should not be afraid of police, they should be friends that they enjoy seeing.

  • dan musetti says:

This is what happens when you have Gov. with the power to pass laws that are through committee instead of laws by the people. Not only is the first amendment in trouble but citizens do not seem to have the right to due process. In my area the police have become the tax police only setting up speed traps to make money. Nobody would complain if there was a taffic problem, but a police officers has a duty to serve and protect. They are supposed to be our freinds if they are only tax collectors we do not need them. I have a friend in Orange county that read a memo that stated they (the police) should set up law enforcement in southern orange county because people in this area just pay their fines at a larger percentage then the rest of orange county. I had a discusion with one of our supervisors in Riverside county (Jeff Stone) I talked about the problem with the tax police his response was will because of these economic times the police need the money. In Bell City the police were told to tow at least 6 cars aday. No due process just really down right thieft. If you are in your car and a big guy with a gun comes up to you and says I am taking your car and you reach under the seat pull out a gun of your own and shoot the guy between the eyes have you committed a crime? What if the guy is a cop? If a guy pulls a gun on you and and steals your wallet with $200 in it and you call the police they come out and make a report and then send you a bill for $500 for using the 911 service who is the bigger criminal? If are police act like the Mexican police departments we need to get rid of them and get back to what police should be>

Praying for Ms. Jones strength & determination. The whole world is watching.

  • Mike Huff says:

The Mexican gang La Raza has already sent 100 or more memebers to that little town to deal with the Sheriff and the deputies.

  • Paul Finell says:

    Hello all,

The situation, as I see it, extends not only at the local area of Quartsite, but all the way through the state government, even including our governor. This is exemplified by the closure of the Arizona mining and mineral museam. The public was allowed little if any input on it’s closure… What a terrible loss to the young of Arizona.

I understand there is an effort to charge and convict the governer in violation of several state laws in reference to the closure of the mining and mineral museam.

It appears to me that there needs to be a total house cleaning in the municipal, county, and state government officials

  • Rza says:

First of all, I’d like to announce that I’m from Germany. I haven’t seen the mainstream media reporting this incident here. I only know it because of this page: http://info.kopp-verlag.de/hintergruende/enthuellungen/mike-adams/regierung-benutzt-fingiertes-impfprogramm-um-massenweise-dns-proben-von-zivilpersonen-zur-terrorbek.html

This is another example of what’s happening to our society. And there’s so much more to it. The greatest problem of all is, however, that so many unaware people actually believe what the government says and does is right. Where has the critical thinking gone? This is happening now, and globally.

Please continue to support her, and furthermore, continue to support our rights. The USA could reach a critical level in the future where they transform into something like Germany from 1933/1939 – 1945.

I hope to hear more about Jennifer’s case soon (if they have not yet censored the internet too much …)

  • Sean says:

Good reporting. Time to clean house in Arizona. Let’s hope the corruption does not extend so high that nothing happens.

  • Enough says:

It’s not just the politicians and law enforcement in Quartzite, nor just Arizona, nor just the United States. It’s global and it’s rotten from the top down. The elite have turned all levels of government and law enforcement against the people.

Lance commented “Where’s the DOJ?” There isn’t going to be any help from the DOJ. The DOJ works for the elite, not the people. Congress works for the elite, not for the people. Local council members work for the elite, not for the people.

We are not going to change the world by expecting help from the very entities that got us into this mess. and now have a death grip on their power.

Change is only going to come when enough people wake up to reality and have had enough to make the change, from the top down. Get the bankers, corporations and their elite controllers out of politics. Get them out of the justice system. Get them out of the education system. Just get them out of our lives.

  • Had enough says:

Time to clean house Arizona. Time to clean house United States.

  • Del Campos says:

That Chief is a either under drugs or a complete MORON!

After his foolish behavior that lady has the right to sue him for damages resulting from an unlawful arrest!

And she would easily win all damages.

In deed the FBI should arrest that chief and US government should charge him with terroristic harassment and abuse of civil rights.

After announcing that he suggest state of an emergency one should not have any doubt that he is mentally sick!

He must be sent for immediate extended for at least 180 days psychiatric evaluation in a closed facility without right to see others and under suicide watch.

The mayor should call National Guard to protect the citizens against that waco!

He shall never again have any right to carry any weapons as he is mentally sick!

People in a similar cases as that lady were awarded hundreds of thousands dollars!

No one have had a right to stop her from talking, there exists the First amendment.

The Chief as a public servant is finished, he should be fired and loose all his retirement benefits.

The assisting cops should be reduced to the lowest range without any right to future promotions!

They should send him to mental hospital somewhere in Russia and use as a rabbit for the experiments exposing him to different drugs and see how he would sing!

  • Joe Cass says:

Wow. Outrage. The woman refuses to pay her fair share of taxes and insists that the rest of the town shoulder her burden.
    Put her under the jail.
