USDA Owns ‘Organic’ Name! Stifles Farmers Markets

Submitted by on July 8, 2011 – 6:08 pm21 Comments

An Arizona farmer shares what he has to do to sell his organic goods at a farmers market.

The USDA claims in writing that they own the “organic” name. Farmers have to use “homegrown” instead to promote their organic goods at local markets.

A 10-page agreement must be filled out completely and submitted prior to booth rental. The agreement must include all permits, certifications, a “crop plan” and a “proposed farm visit schedule.” It has to include a map of the farm location with cross streets, land marks, and mile posts for accurate location.

Most of us want some kind of process to make sure we’re buying organic, but what these farmers have to do to sell a few carrots is almost too much to bear. It’s a wonder they even bother anymore.

The process effects the high costs of true organic food, yet the USDA does not crack down on typical grocery goods bearing the “organic” name without proof. Nor do they regulate other English speaking countries stealing the “organic” name.

The video shows how the markets are centrally planned and politically controlled so that local farmers are tracked and everyone get’s their cut.

Political control Freaks take over Farmers Market

3 definitions of organic is on the table

    90% clean 10 % contamination
    70% clean 30% contamination
    65% clean 35% contamination

so the last one is what most people eatwithout there knowledge

Organic Means Carbon based—you can pee pooh spray mix with chemicals
and these plants are still Organic being Organic means Carbon based

the myth of organics is what has been sold as a bill of goods all BS
    But this is the myth

Homegrown Would work for me better then Organic or Natural which is another slur of BS
they will feed meat and poultry the same GMO grains as they do the regular meats and Call it Natural
    Sales and manipulations
and if people doubt this go back 3 months where whole foods came right out and got exposd on this very issue and have said now they will compromise and co exist with GMO
you cannot compromise with this one will pollute the other and cause a genetic anomally

start your own home grown operation and sell it as such
works for me start a home grown food revolution

    Hi,

This is such incredible BS! Instead of preserving what the good ol’USA has left they are perverting it into a freak show run by government bullies and educated derelicts. We as a people have to wake up and get this, our country back on track and get rid of every greasy politician and and kick the asses of the big companies to show them they can’t run our lives. But then again, no one wants to shake the tree of Liberty, seems that we all will lose.

    Shame on us all.

When you understand that to control food, allows you to control the population, this all begins to become very clear.

  • Claudia Walker says:

We are fast becoming worse than Russia or Nazi Germany. by the time they are don’e with the non-food food and their rules for real food, we are really going to starve.

  • Sargam says:

This must have been pushed by the big stores like Whole Foods, duh. Rubbing the competition.

  • Sara Reynolds says:

They can’t stop us from raising our own produce! Even in central Phoenix we could and did raise some of our own garden crops and we had fruit trees of all kinds–peach, pear, apricot, apple, and plum as well as every kind of citrus. We didn’t use pesticides. Everything was delicious and truly home-grown!

  • Don Jusko says:

Homegrown organic is now different than Government organic…

Since we are already using the term organic how can it mean anything but grown with natural nature and containing no poisons? Is it that the current government wants to call the forcibly unlabeled, genetically modified, round-up ready, untested by them crops organic? It’s escaping me how a descriptive term like “deep water” can be changed to mean shallow water by anyone. We didn’t give anyone permission to change our language by decree, to change our English language by force and threat of jail.

My system’s sound is down so I don’t know what the video is saying. It’s seems like a new liberal/progressive/socialist government ruling like “homosexual is OK now” or “radiation won’t hurt you”. These wrong doings will be corrected soon enough, as soon as you’ve had enough and remove him. Do it now, why wait?

  • Jody says:

Don Jusko, I’m gay. Why are you attacking me in a conversation about organic foods? Take your bigoted views elsewhere.

  • Does this mean the USDA will be legally nabbing more words from the dictionary for their own personal use for their friends in the supermarket like “natural?” What about “GMO free?” What will that really mean once USDA owns it? Maybe they’ll grab any word that implies “health” and only allow us to “duck speak.”

  • Don Jusko says:

Jody, it’s your choice, in politics I see trouble, in my God’s eyes I see trouble, in you I see trouble. Woman should have babies and love it. Now you can keep this going or drop it, your not going to change my opinion of you.

This is what happens when people vote for a party that promotes bigger government, wants to dictate your persoanl healthcare, controls food production, schools and the media. We need to create a tea party of foodies and supplements to protect ourselves from the powers of governement!

  • Margo says:

OK, so what are we gonna do about it? I think it’s time for a revolution. “Action Items” such as petitions aren’t going to work fast enough to protect us from GMOs. Once they get a good foothold, there will be no stopping them. What happens when the words of the English language have new meanings? We won’t know what we are eating!

  • Nancy says:

Margo has a point… what is the best thing to do?

Has anyone read about how Julie Bass in Oak Park, Michigan is being prosecuted for planting vegetables in her front yard? You can look it up or here is a link for a short news clip:

We think we live in a free country but really we are in a cage and most people don’t even know it. We have to start standing up for other people when it doesn’t directly affect us and also stop sorting people into pre-labeled groups.

In the same week I have received mail from the far right and far left using the constitution as a reason to stand with their party against the “evil” of the other. It feels like neither side is really working for the people, they are just interested in keeping us distracted and divided.

Let’s all try to focus on making small changes in our own circles and let that have a ripple effect. Seeing the larger picture and trying to make changes from the top down is what can keep us spinning our wheels. I try to remember it’s not my job to fix it all… but I can make a difference.

  • stymie says:

Gigi, what happens when you vote for a party that promotes little government is you get NO or very little regulation of big industries.. This is what happened to the economy, politicians on both sides of the aisle voted to deregulate the banks. To see what happened go to the library, we stilll have those for now, and check out INSIDE JOB. It’ll make you mad as hell.

Yea I get it about too much regulation but we need to have some so there is some protection of our well being, and get the pols out that don’t represent us. No or vry little governemnt that you may propose means uncontrolled take over by big corps. There still is a chance but the best means that we can be effective in making changes is within the system, within government, not trying to change government.

  • Farmer Phil says:

Yearly farm visits by the market Manager are a great idea!

I’ve been selling at the Farmers Markets for 7 years, this ensures the honset Farmers have fair competition.

Organic Certification is not for everybody, it was the best decision I ever made though.

  • r. crombie says:

Hate to say it, but with all the corpoate money-grabbing pressure on even the basic elements in our lives, we are headed toward an eventual revolution just to survive

  • deHaven Gates says:

My guess is that the reason the small farmer’s location is required on this form is so that the government can locate where the ‘renegade’ ‘homegrown’ food is being farmed. Why?
So they can ride in and shut down the farmers, like they have been doing with the Raw Milk producers.

And of course there is the hassle factor. Who really has the patience and willingness to deal with the bureacratic BS? So jumping through the hoops becomes normalized, just like the humiliating treatment at airports in the name of ‘homeland security’.

  • TomK says:

Everyday I wake up and find something new that our government is doing in order to gain more control over us and help posper big corporations and they do it in the name of safety, children, health, etc. because they know them terms will allow these regulations and laws to pass very easy.

Something is going to have to be done before it gets to late, if it isn’t already…

  • Maison Rose says:

Walking into the farmers market without forms spells big trouble for women and children who trust strangers to grow their food. Damn right you need a form so I can sue you if you make me sick. Same as a restaurant. If you’re ashamed of your produce, stay home and complain about the forms.
