More and more Americans living past 90
If your saving up for retirement you better keep on saving. More and more Americans are living longer, a lot longer. By the year 2050 nine million people will be in their 90s. That’s a lot of early bird specials!

America is getting older.
The Census Bureau reported Thursday that there are now nearly 2 million people in this country in their 90s — three times as many as there were back in 1980. The number is projected to reach 9 million by 2050.
CBS News medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook reports that there are many implications for our aging population.
Sidney Kronish, 99, may move a little slowly these days, but this retired economics professor still has a lot to say.
“I still read. I study. I write. I talk, and people sometimes listen,” Kronish said.
Better medical care accounts for much of the boom in those living over 90. Dr. Claudia Kawas has been studying this age group.
“Much of that extension has come at a cost. We’ve extended the quantity of life, but now we need to extend the quality of life,” Kawas said.
Most of those who live into their nineties outlive their resources, with average income under $15,000 annually.
One fear in the coming decades is soaring medical costs. Currently, Alzheimer’s affects 5.4 million people. By 2050, that may grow to 16 million. The cost will go from $183 billion in treatment to $1.1 trillion.
Arlene Richmond runs Kattay House, a senior living center. She says the 90-and-overs do best when they’re fully engaged.
“Being part of a community changes their world. They have people who share their passions. They have a reason to get up in the morning. They continue to be the movers and shakers that they were,” Richmond said.
Sidney Kronish has his own secret to a longer life: Family.
“I was born into a wonderful family. And my wife was special. As she put it, I chased her until she caught me,” Kronish said.
Women make up three-quarters of this elderly population.
Currently, our healthcare system absolutely cannot cope with this population. Economists simply do not know where this extra money for handling the aging population will come from.

The answer is as easy as falling off a log, stop funding the military war machine. We have enough weapons to arm the whole world twice over. more is not better.
If we have more elders like the 84-year old Seattle woman whose photo went viral as she was dripping with pepper spray, this will not be as much of a problem as anticipated.
We also have a serious problem with young people who have acquired diabetes from eating toxic food-like substances.
Focusing on elders takes attention away from this challenge.
My mother has alzheimer’s and she is only in her early 70s. I can tell you it is no joke to deal with. America has a huge problem with this yet in other countries like India it relatively rare. Factors in my opinion are largely diet in which India among other things uses a lot of turmeric suspected of helping retain ones memory.
My mother also has many common addictions like sugary foods, tv, and buying and hoarding. Buying can which leads to an over abundance goods creates chaotic like environments which have a negative effect on the mind. In India most people can’t afford to over buy, but in the west it is becoming more and more common.
If the government wanted to help they could change food laws like allowing non pasteurized milk products and encouraging buying less, or at least spending instead on services like cleaning, massage, and exercise classes. But if we always waited for the government to act we’d be in big trouble. Best to reset our priorities and encourage those around us towards healthy practices which include not only what we let into our bodies, but what we also let into our minds and houses.
Interesting, considering this age group is the least immunized. How did THEY survive largely without the miracle of vaccination especially in their young years??
