Immunise or lose benefits, parents told
Parents who do not have their children fully immunised will be stripped of family tax benefits under a scheme announced by the Federal Government.
The Government says 11 per cent of five-year-olds are not immunised and has announced a shake-up of the system which will take effect from July 1 next year.
Under the changes, families who refuse vaccinations face losing up to $2,100 per child in benefits.
Families will need to have their children fully immunised to receive the Family Tax Benefit (FTB) Part A end-of-year supplement.
A new immunisation check will be introduced for one-year-olds to supplement the existing immunisation checks at two and five years of age.
The FTB supplement, worth $726 per child each year, will now only be paid once a child is fully immunised at these checks.
Families are already required to have their child fully immunised to receive Child Care Benefit and the Child Care Rebate.
Children will also be required for the first time to be vaccinated against meningococcal C, pneumococcal and chicken pox.
Children will also be immunised against measles, mumps and rubella earlier, at 18 months instead of the current four years of age.
Health Minister Nicola Roxon is also announcing today a new campaign to advise parents and healthcare providers on what they can do to protect babies from whooping cough.
All parents of newborns will receive letters providing information on immunising against whooping cough and how to identify the disease and prevent it spreading.
“We know that immunisation is fundamental to a child’s lifelong health and that’s why we want to make sure children are immunised at the right time,” Ms Roxon said.
The Government says the changes will deliver savings of $209.1 million over four years.

Would be nice if the article stated that this was for the country of Australia, not the USA.
and it won’t be too far into the future that they will be forced to get the HPV and Anthrax vaccines, as well. Is that worth the 2,100 bucks? It’s one of the reasons I fear a true gov’t run health care system (not the Obamacare mess which is still private insurance). When the gov’t is paying the bills, they will be able to impose all kinds of requirements and restrictions.
This is just for Australia, correct?
My son had an adverse reaction to the series of chicken pox vaccinations that were required by the state for him to go to school. He was 14. Even though the doctor wrote a note that said my son had a natural immunity to the chicken pox, the city & state were insistent about the shots.
He was incredibly irritable, had disrupted sleep patterns, heard voices, did not eat well even with food he liked – it was all blamed on him being an adolescent. After about 14 months there was a positive change in him, and about a year after that he was back to ‘normal’ at age 16. Don’t get this shot for your child if you can prevent it! It is better for your child to get the chicken pox than to get this shot, which may also have a sterilization effect on the child over time. The shot was supposedly invented for those who did not get the pox in childhood, in order to prevent them from pox or shingles as adults. It is all an experiment – it is a theory, not fact! Ask for the PROVEN test results and see what they tell you.

On first reading, I assumed the article referred to the U.S. federal government, but it comes from an Australian source (abc.news.au)and the U.S. does not have a Health Minister…so it must be about the Australian government. Somewhat of a relief that such tyrannical measures aren’t hitting the U.S.–yet. But it does not bode well.

Well I got a little excited until I noticed that ABC means Australian BC. It would have been usefull to point this out in the article, and a bit misleading not to. And wasn’t it Australia that halted their H1N1 flu shot program because of a number of deaths. Strange that they would then do this.
The USA gummint will be inspired by this idea to do the same here. This is another increment in the move to total control of citizen’s lives. We got to resist all encroachments to our rights before the right to dissent will be outlawed. The gummint (Australia, USA, EU) is increasingly controlling all aspects of our lives and will continue until we say “enough is enough” in no uncertain terms. This BS has got to stop.
I am normally against the government having control over our life but this is a Public Health Issue. And if you are willing to take the government’s money, you should have to follow their rules. I know vaccinations have been sited as causing Autism but I believe it is all the poisons that we have dumped into our air & water.
